Switzerland Ski Holidays - More Snow than Ever |
The Swiss Alps. Just saying or even thinking those words brings to mind
snow-covered mountains jutting their peaks into the sky. With so many
of those snow-covered peaks across Switzerland, it's the perfect place
to take your next ski holiday.
Like the thrill and challenge of downhill skiing? Or the good workout
and spectacular views of a cross-country ski trek? There's plenty of
opportunities for both across this Alpine country. Dozens of ski
resorts cater to the ski holiday desires of the Swiss and foreign
vacationers alike, offering up excellent skiing, breathtaking views,
charming Swiss villages, even some delectable chocolate and cheese
fondues, for which the Swiss are known.
Some popular Swiss ski resorts include:
Verbier has access to 400km of pistes (marked ski runs). At the
resort's higher altitudes, the sun and snow record is excellent. If you
plan your ski holiday for Verbier, you also can schedule some skiing on
the Mont Fort Glacier. With 70 ski runs to choose from, you won't be
lacking for outdoor fun during your ski holiday.
Probably the most famous ski resort in Switzerland is St. Moritz, a
name familiar to even the non-skier. It is the most posh and thus the
most expensive, but if you want your Swiss ski holiday to include a bit
of the high life as well as some basic skiing, you might want to
indulge in a stay at St. Moritz. Perhaps better than the 88 downhill
slopes are the cross-country tracks around a frozen lake. Stunning. St.
Moritz has hosted Olympic skiing twice, so that also adds to the
resort's cache.
Klosters, a part of the Davos ski network, is a favorite ski holiday
destination for Prince Charles and the royal family. Klosters share the
Parsenn ski field, but Klosters has its own ski area, the Madrisa. The
resort is split into two parts, Dorf and Platz. Platz has classy hotels
near the station and has more of a lively vibe to it. If you're looking
for a quieter, calmer ski holiday, Dorf would be the better choice.
Klosters offers 97 slopes divided between all skiers ability levels.
The resort is still in the higher price range, but it's not as touristy
as some of the others and has thus retained more of its true Alpine
charm. Plus there's that possibility of rubbing elbows with royalty to
consider. Imagine telling your friends about that aspect of your ski
holiday when you return home.Jayne Collingwood
