The resort of Courchevel 1850 is one of the five Courchevel
villages in the
northernmost valley of the Three Valleys ski area south east of Albertville. The village, originally Moriond, is the
finaL
resort on the
road up from the Bozel Valley after Courchevel le Praz and 1550. It lies to the
west of 1650 with 1650 nestling below it. Courchevel is the chic
French ski resort bustling during the day and very much alive at night. There is a good bus service to the other Courchevels
and la Tania
and Meribel, as well as to the towns and villages in the Bozel Valley. A
25 minute bus down to Champagny allows you to take a lift up to la Plagne - where you can ski for a day on
your Three valley lift pass.
The vast three valley lift system is connected to the other six resorts in two more valleys, Meribel,
Mottaret, Val Thorens,
Reberty, les Menuires and
St Martin de Belleville. The skiing is some of the
best in the world catering for every standard, and the off piste can be exceptional. The snow stays
longest on the Courchevel side as the resorts face north and locally get the highest snowfall, but at
Val Thorens the Cime de Carron cable car goes to 3200m (10400ft) where good snow is guaranteed all season.
There is also some good off piste glacier skiing to 3400m (11000ft).There is a fourth valley with excellent skiing from the top of the Cime de Carron down to a half
way station. In mid season it is possible to ski down to Orelle which links the Chambery-Albertville
road with la Norma, the Frejus tunnel and the Italian border fifteen miles away.
The straight distance from 1850 to Orelle is 25km (15miles) and can be skied in a morning by intermediates, although the lift
to the Cime de Carron can sometimes be half an hour's wait in busy times.
All the resorts in the Three Valleys are serviced by snow cannons and
there is usually a skiable piste down to the low lying villages of le Praz, la Tania and St Martin de
Belleville until mid April, when the flowers are starting to come out and it is definitely shorts
and shirtsleeve skiing.
The French Railways ski train from Waterloo
(UK) runs Friday nights to Moutiers arriving around 0800 on the Saturday morning, leaving a
40 minute drive to Courchevel 1850. With the return train leaving on Saturday evenings this gives a
full seven days skiing in all the Three Valley ski areas.
