Les Contamines is a quiet and unspoilt village
at the top of the Montjoie Valley, five miles south of the ancient spa
town of St Gervais-le-Bain. Lying at over 1150 metres it has 120 km of
piste, and as most of the slopes are above 1800m and face north and
north-east, they keep their snow cover better than the surrounding
resorts. The main emphasis is on intermediate skiing although there are
some interesting black runs and plenty of off piste.
The resort itself is attractive with wooden chalets, old fashioned
hotels and an old church. Night life is centred around the bars and
restaurants, and there are two discos. Considering its proximity to the
international resorts of Chamonix
and Megève, it has a genuinely
French atmosphere.
