Resort Details

Situated in the Piedmont region of Italy, near the border of Italy, Sestriere has long been a weekend retreat for the city-dwellers of nearby Turin and has the best skiing in the Milky Way region. Sestriere will host of the Alpine Ski events during the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Developed in the 1930s as Europe's first purpose-built ski resort, Sestriere is known less for its charm than for its reliable snow conditions and extensive skiing. The village sits atop a barren, windy pass. Its architecture is not beautiful - most of the structures huddled around the imposing, cylindrical Club Med tower are 60s-era apartment blocks. It is the skiing that counts here.

Sestriere trades on the enormous scope of the lift-linked Milky Way - in Italian, the Via Lattea - and on snow conditions uncharacteristically good for this region. North-facing slopes, high altitudes, and snowmaking equipment ensure snow cover and, in preparation for the 2006 Olympic Games, vast improvements to the uplift system.

Crowding at week ends can be balanced against virtually empty mid week pistes. There is a lot for everyone here with beginners especially well catered for. There is extensive heliskiing and snowboarders will find plenty of untracked terrain.

With an international atmosphere the resort is full of good restaurants and bars. The apres ski scene is lively and offers something for everyone - at weekends the place is really buzzing
