One of the highest ski resorts in the Alps at over 2000 metres and a large glacier to boot, makes Tignes an all year round skiing destination. The area, known as the Espace Killy, combines with Val d'Isere to make up a massive 300 kilometres between the two resorts.

The three main stations - Tignes le Lavachet, Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret are not the most pleasing to look at but there is a buzzing night life and plenty of good restaurants a little lower down the valley in les Brevieres and les Boisses.

Tignes les Brevieres deserves a mention as it is a pleasant Savoyarde village lying at 1550m  in the shadow of the hydroelectric dam, and by far the nicest place to stay in the area.

The skiing, which is above the tree line makes up for the lack of architecture and is superb at all levels from several free beginners runs to the experts' Lavachet Wall. Snowboarders will also find some of the best terrain in the Alps and could ski a different part of the mountain for weeks without going down the same slope.
