APARTMENTS in Chamonix
The town of Chamonix is the capital of skiing and the mountaineering mecca of the French Alps. Dominated on the east side by the massif of Mont Blanc (15574ft), it is the main town for the Mont Blanc region westwards down the valley including
St Gervais, les Contamines, Megève, Praz sur Arly and Nôtre Dame de Bellecombe, les Houches and le Tour.
Further up the valley towards the Swiss border is the charming village of Argentiere with excellent skiing to the doorstep; further on still is the smaller village of Vallorcine.
There is good novice and intermediate skiing in les Houches and la Tour, but the skiing for experts is exceptional off piste and there is plenty of scope for extreme skiing. The cable car ride to the top of the Aiguille de Midi at 3842m and the ski down the 24km Vallee Blanche is an experience that has to be done at least once in a lifetime (good intermediates).
The town is vibrant with great restaurants and nightlife to suit every pocket. Taxis, public busses and chalet busses are the standard mode of transport in the valley.
